Main Page >> Organizations and Associations Long Island's Oldest Public Observatory The Custer Institute and Observatory is Long Island's oldest public observatory (est. 1927) with the darkest skies on the island. It includes a 22' domed observatory with a 16" Cassegrain, a three-bay ground-based observatory (two C14" scopes and a 10' binocular scope), a library, museum, historic grinding room, radio astronomy facilities, as well as a hall that serves for art exhibits and lectures. Frequent educational programs, portable planetarium shows, annual conference, monthly newsletter, scholarships, research programs and internship opportunities.
